A little bit of yarn, a little bit of magic, and two friends who love crafting.

We’re Mel & Josie, the two makers behind Thread & Thistle.

Our story began long before the name did. Mel first learnt to crochet from her mum when she was young, carrying those early stitches with her through the years. During COVID, she picked up her hook again and began relearning the craft, slowly falling back in love with the rhythm of yarn passing through her fingers and the magic of turning a simple ball of wool into something beautiful.

2 years ago, Josie learnt to crochet from her 2 friends Mel and Charlotte, and it didn’t take long for her to become completely hooked. Josie discovered a particular love for creating soft, fluffy velvet-yarn plushie monsters — each one a little strange, a little sweet, and full of its own personality.

We met through our love of Aussie doof culture, where music, nature, creativity and a little bit of magic tend to find their way together. Somewhere along the way, we started sharing our love of crochet, dreaming up strange little creatures, making things for festivals, and collecting inspiration from the bush, mushrooms, wildflowers and all the little wonders hiding in nature.

And so, Thread & Thistle began to grow.

Our creations are inspired by the feeling of wandering through an enchanted forest — earthy, whimsical, a little witchy, and never too perfect. We love pieces that feel like they’ve been discovered rather than mass-produced; something you might imagine finding tucked away in a little woodland cottage.

Everything we make is created by hand, with plenty of love, patience and a touch of our own weirdness woven into every stitch.
